I participate in multidisciplinary teams that sometimes discuss the best home placement for children. Attorneys routinely say that unless there is a significant physical injury there is little chance of removing that child from a parent that is neglectful or emotionally abusive. Too many people do not understand that trauma also injures children, it\u2019s just an invisible injury. I look forward to the day when the information in this book is common knowledge and everyone will know what supports we need to provide to children that experience trauma. Thank you for participating in this book study. I hope that it inspires you to do what you can to be part of a Healing Community.

We should all be vocal, knowledgeable advocates for those students who have experienced those "invisible" injuries, and spread the word as much as possible. Another issue is - where would the children go? A lack of foster homes is a real crisis that makes social services hesitant to remove a child unless the danger is immediate and physical because they know there simply aren't enough homes or alternatives. We should all think about being foster parents, at least at some point, and spread the word about the need. In order to help these students, we must all be willing to do more, say more, and love more.","dateCreated":"1432665066","smartDate":"May 26, 2015","userCreated":{"username":"barkera1","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/barkera1","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"82272960","body":"It frustrates me when I hear social workers or colleagues say, "they have a roof over their head, a place to sleep, and food so DCF won't do anything about it!" The more attention that is brought to the public, the better our court systems are going to perform in putting the best interest of the child first. I always said I wish I could live on a huge farm and take in all the needy children and fill their lives with love, laughter and fulfillment. We only have them for such a short while and we do the best we can to fill their day with knowledge, love and acceptance. It is frustrating to send them off with such high hopes and then have them come back after a weekend of witnessing fighting, hunger and rejection. But we do the best we can. And as teachers, we can take comfort in knowing that for the time we had those children in our lives, we have shown them love, comfort and empowerment. roopanid","dateCreated":"1432671686","smartDate":"May 26, 2015","userCreated":{"username":"Lps-sysop","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Lps-sysop","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"82274884","body":"A colleague of mine said it best, "You can't learn from someone you don't like." It is a reminder that there is child abuse and neglect that is evident in our society and the lasting effects it has on our students we serve. It is heartbreaking and frustrating that we in the business of children can not fix it all or put an end to it. But we must hold tight to the possibilities of what positive relationships may be able to offer these children. We know our profession can make a difference in young lives, this book helps us to realize the reality of how deep those differences can truly be.","dateCreated":"1432693152","smartDate":"May 26, 2015","userCreated":{"username":"loftonv","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/loftonv","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"82282668","body":"The impact of trauma on the brain and it's effects on children is not an easy discussion. I am glad that I participated in this book study because knowledge is key. The more that this topic is brought to the forefront, the better equipped that educators can make a difference in the lives of these traumatized children. We can make a difference by developing positive relationships and providing a safe environment for them.","dateCreated":"1432696306","smartDate":"May 26, 2015","userCreated":{"username":"dperez69","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/dperez69","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"82283680","body":"I agree that this book was at times difficult to read because we wish these sort of situations didn't exist for children. However, as educators, we are in the right profession to help these kids overcome the trauma they live. I am an example of how one teacher's warm smile and caring way can heal the wounds and help students rise above the effects of trauma. Teaching isn't always about who has the best test scores, sometimes it's more about who has the right words and actions to pave the way for a student to strive to be better than the trauma they've suffered, break the chains, and declare victory over their lives. I had a huge "A-Ha" moment when my daughter was in third grade and did not understand why school gave free breakfast to children of FCAT days. Her perception was that all mommies got up and made their children breakfast and had a discussion with them while packing lunches and on FCAT days all mommies made an extra special breakfast. She had absolutely no concept of the number of classmates whos mommies didn't even get up wiht them in the morning much less make breakfast. I think this book was an excellent, jolting reminder that not all worlds opperate on the routine that our personal world does.","dateCreated":"1432734135","smartDate":"May 27, 2015","userCreated":{"username":"mommypoz","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/mommypoz","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"82292014","body":"This book has been a wonderful read, very helpful and practical.
