What do you feel the school\u2019s role is in this process? What can teachers do to create meaningful relationships with their students?

A teacher's ability to handle discipline issues, while it needs to be monitored, shouldn't be dictated down to the last detail. Teachers may need to be flexible in order to accommodate a student's needs and therefore build that relationship. In addition, the school should not make promises that the teacher communicates to the students, but then the school doesn't fulfill because that undermines the trust the students have in their teacher. (Ex: ice cream party for the highest number of perfect attendance - then the ice cream doesn't show up). Also, discretion over certain curriculum decisions is important. If my class really wants to explore a topic because they are curious about it, they trust me to allow and guide them through it, not shut them down because "it's not on the test."","dateCreated":"1432664720","smartDate":"May 26, 2015","userCreated":{"username":"barkera1","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/barkera1","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"82273616","body":"It is the school's role to make sure that there are programs or plans put into place for students to recover from trauma. A teacher should have an open door policy for their students to be able to openly talk and develop that meaningful relationship.","dateCreated":"1432667564","smartDate":"May 26, 2015","userCreated":{"username":"dperez69","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/dperez69","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"82274842","body":"Principals first of all, should make sure the person they are hiring is in the profession for all the right reasons; they have to genuinely care about children! Students need to trust the person they are spending so much time with and feel loved and accepted for who they are. Without this bond, the students will feel a detachment and not be fully committed to doing their best and making friends etc. One way of forming these meaningful relationships is to be "present" when speaking to and listening to a child. They should be able to clearly see that you are genuinely interested in what they are saying, feeling or doing. If it is becoming evident that a teacher, para, etc is not putting the best interests of the child first, then this needs to be addressed and rectified right away. roopanid","dateCreated":"1432671610","smartDate":"May 26, 2015","userCreated":{"username":"Lps-sysop","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Lps-sysop","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"82274848","body":"Schools can continue teacher education in subject areas like this, and as a teacher we can continue to make sure our students are in caring, safe, loving environments. This is accomplished differently from class to class but the results are the same; risk free, caring and nurturing environment = respectful and highly engaged students. In a classroom with a sense of community, it is clear that all students lift up one another, celebrate each others' successes and encourage one another when there are struggles. We are required to teach the standards the state determines for us but how we build relationships and the classroom atmosphere is totally up to each teacher. It doesn't matter what the academic goals are, if the child does not feel respected, cared about, and listened to...the best teaching strategies are less effective.","dateCreated":"1432692398","smartDate":"May 26, 2015","userCreated":{"username":"loftonv","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/loftonv","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"82283424","body":"Not only is it important for teachers to build positive relationships with students, but it is equally important to teach students how to build positive relationships with each other.
