The label a child is given often determines how this child will be treated. James\u2019 mother wanted others to believe he was incorrigible. I believe children will live up to our expectations or live down to our expectations. I think when teachers have a better understanding of trauma\u2019s impact on behavior, they will be more likely to separate the child from the behavior (see beyond the label), more likely to provide effective supports, and have high expectations for the student.

I was warned, with sympathetic looks, that this child would punch people in the face, climb fences and run, rip posters off the wall, etc. All of this was true. However, the child had since become medicated, and older, and his behavior was not as frequent as I thought it would be. I treated him just like everybody else, and was pleasantly surprised by how far he came this year. People change with circumstance and time, and every year is a fresh start. Even to this student (who said "Everybody here HATES me because I'm crazy") I explained that this year was his chance for a new start and make a new reputation and he slowly realized I wasn't prejudging him (I told him "I KNOW you can do it!). The year went smoothly with only a few incidents because he was finally ready to make that change as much as he possibly could.","dateCreated":"1432664310","smartDate":"May 26, 2015","userCreated":{"username":"barkera1","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/barkera1","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"82273590","body":"It is essential, of not imperative, for all students to have high expectations. I would hope that most of us, if not all of us, who work with children with special needs, whether it be children who are in Reach or otherwise, have the knowledge and experience to know that children do not come in predefined packages. One of the most enjoyable aspects of my career is getting to know these children and learning about their identifiable character traits. We must remember to put the child first and the disability second and to work with the disability not against it. roopanid","dateCreated":"1432671517","smartDate":"May 26, 2015","userCreated":{"username":"Lps-sysop","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Lps-sysop","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"82274828","body":"I believe you don't judge a book by its cover. While labeling a child might give that child certain services they need, it might also encourage pre-judments on a child. My rule of thumb, is always to get to know the child first and foremost. How a child behaves with one adult is not always how they behave with others. It dependds on relationships, bonds, and trust. In the education system, labeling children often comes with associated accommodations that help them reach their potential in different ways. However, as stated by many above, every child is different and very child reacts differently to different adults. I have heard parents to explain to their child, "yes, you have a disability or syndrome, etc... But I believe in you and you can and will succeed, and we are going help you every step of the way." These children seem to try harder and believe they can succeed. I have also heard parents who say, "my child can't be held accountable for this or that because they have this label or that." In these cases I see a child who has no expectations of self, blames every action on their disability, and is unwilling or less likely to learn coping mechanisms and strategies to help them reach their fullest potential. Educators have the responsibility for helping children reach their fullest potential regardless of any label and teaching children to accept responsibility for their actions and a replacement strategies to improve that behavior. Recognizing special needs does not mean excusing poor or unkind behaviors. It does not mean ignoring behaviors that negatively effect the student or other students. It simply means approaching the situation differently, with empathy and compassion. Even the most behaviorally challenged student understands when people have given up on them or accept less of them, they get it.","dateCreated":"1432691560","smartDate":"May 26, 2015","userCreated":{"username":"loftonv","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/loftonv","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"82283132","body":"Seeing past the label is very important. Children react differently to new settings and new people. They are fully aware of people who are truly there to help them and care about them and they can detect when someone is just pretending to do that. Establishing all if the things we've discussed in previous chapters is critical for children with these labels to be successful - routines\/procedures, consistency, positive reinforcement, building and maintaining a positive relationship, and giving them choices and a sense of empowerment are all critical in helping them to rise to the level of expectation we set for them.
