The more knowledge we have the greater our opportunities of minimizing the adverse effects of trauma and maximizing positive outcomes for our students. I'm embarrassed to say that for my 24 plus years of working with at-risk students, I had the "children are resilient" philosophy. I didn't understand the "brain science" behind the chronic chaos and relentless dysfunction that many of our students face day in and day out. Now that I have that knowledge, I am anxious to share it with as many people as possible so we can improve outcomes for as many students as possible. Thank you for joining me in this book study. I think you will all appreciate this book and learn so much. I know I have.

I often have wondered how they gain those skills they missed. I have also seen students who I wondered if they could recover do amazingly well, and make great strides in ways I would have never anticipated. I so enjoyed reading this book and seeing that relationship factors are really the key to helping students recover.","dateCreated":"1432660000","smartDate":"May 26, 2015","userCreated":{"username":"lantzyc","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/lantzyc","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"82274910","body":"No matter the age level, ability level, or demographics of the classes we expect to teach, we have to be prepared for anything in order to be effective. As educators, and people who spend a great deal of time with students who have suffered some sort of trauma in their young lives, we need to be made aware of the situation and taught how to appropriately handle it. I think it is very important to spend a lot of time in the beginning of the year building positive relationships with the students. They need to know that we are not only there to teach them, but also to care about them. H.
